    Elena Horowitz-Brookes

    Bio

Elena Horowitz-Brookes began painting and drawing at the age of twelve. She enrolled in adult painting classes where she studied and was greatly influenced by the works of Cezanne, Matisse and the French Impressionist movement. Soon she began drawing and painting from the human figure. In the years to follow she remained active in figurative drawing, which remains the backbone of her structural approach to drawing and painting, whether abstract or abstract/figurative in nature.

Ms. Brookes attended Otis Art Institute for one year, then transferred to UCSB to study with noted watercolorist, William Dole. He expressed great enthusiasm for her unorthodox use of the watercolor medium. In the years to follow, she offered to the public several group and solo shows from her art studios in Los Angeles, as she continued to explore and experiment in various media, including encaustic on canvas.

Her current work includes painting on canvas, drawings in an array of materials, and watercolor. She explores an imaginary existence where earthly terrains, micro organisms, and spacial environments reside in altered states.
